How to Train Your Dragon
Release date: March 31

What is it? A computer-generated 3D comedy adventure in which a Viking teenager, Hiccup, befriends a dentally challenged dragon named Toothless.
Who’s in it? Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder) voices Hiccup, while action-movie hunk Gerard Butler, who already has a dragon movie (2002’s Reign of Fire) under his belt, voices Hiccup’s dim-witted dad.

What are its prospects? It is attractively animated, with flying sequences uncannily reminiscent of Avatar’s aerial thrills. The perennial popularity of dinosaurs among pre-teen audiences will boost its appeal.

Clash of the Titans
Release date: April 2
What is it? A remake of the 1981 hit movie, which was itself based on the exploits of Perseus, son of Zeus and the first hero of Greek myth, who has to fight a variety of monstrous creatures, including the Gorgon Medusa. Bursting with computer-generated special effects, the film’s release date was reportedly delayed by a last-minute decision by Warner Bros to convert it to 3D.
Who’s in it? Avatar star Sam Worthington is Perseus alongside Liam Neeson (Zeus), Ralph Fiennes (Hades) and Gemma Arterton (Io).What are its prospects? Good: cinematic fantasy-adventure is on a roll.

Centurion
Release date: April 23
What is it? Set in northern England in AD117, it tells the story of the sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, who then accompanies the legendary Ninth Legion on a mission to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth.
Who’s in it? A top-notch pair of tough Brits in Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) and Dominic West (The Wire), plus former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko.
What are its prospects? A sword-and-sandals epic in the hands of Neil Marshall, director of subterranean shocker The Descent (2005)? Looks promising.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Release date: April 23
What is it? Twenty-three years on from the film that defined the “greed is good” era, director Oliver Stone resurrects Gordon Gekko. The disgraced corporate raider is released from jail just as financial markets are heading for meltdown; at home, he must heal his relationship with his daughter.
Who’s in it? Michael Douglas returns as Gekko, Carey Mulligan (fresh from An Education) plays his daughter, Winnie, while Shia LaBeouf is an ambitious young trader — and Winnie’s boyfriend.
What are its prospects? Stone is usually on the money — and Gekko’s such a bankable monster.

Iron Man 2
Release date: April 30
What is it? Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as billionaire industrialist/superhero Tony Stark. Mickey Rourke plays the lightning-bolt hurling villain. There are sure to be big bangs aplenty.
Who’s in it? Downey and Rourke are joined by not one but two pouting babes — Gwyneth Paltrow, back as Pepper Potts, and, as the Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson.
What are its prospects? Bound to be another cast-iron hit.

Robin Hood
Release date: May 14
What is it? Sir Ridley Scott reworks the sylvan myth in the style of his own Gladiator — with the same star. Robin is back from the Crusades and in trouble with King John, who declares him an outlaw “to be hunted all the days of his life”: cue a feast of deadeye archery and slashing swordfights.
Who’s in it? Russell Crowe plays Robin and fellow Antipodean Cate Blanchett Maid Marian. Matthew Macfadyen is the Sheriff of Nottingham.
What are its prospects? Rid and Russell are a pretty reliable duo, and the screenplay is by Brian (LA Confidential) Helgeland.

Sex and the City 2
Release date: May 28
What is it? “Sometimes, you just have to get away with the girls,” chirps Carrie as she joins Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda far away from the gorgeousness of their Manhattan existence in the heat and dust of the North African desert.
Who’s in it? The indispensables: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon. Mr Big’s back; Penélope Cruz has a cameo role; and Liza Minnelli appears as herself. There will be camels, too.
What are its prospects? Carrie on at the box office.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Release date: May 28
What is it? Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) directs this big-screen video game adaptation. In ancient Persia, Prince Dastan joins forces with Princess Tamina to prevent nefarious nobleman Nizam from unleashing the Sands of Time and destroying the world.
Who’s in it? Jake Gyllenhaal is the eponymous hero, while Gemma Arterton leaps from one mythical world (Clash of the Titans) into another as Tamina. Ben Kingsley plays the villain.
What are its prospects? Blood and sand — a killer combination at the box office right now.

Knight and Day
Release date: July 2
What is it? A mismatched couple are on the run in an action-comedy where plot will be secondary to a succession of mega-decibel shoot-outs and wheel-squealing car chases.
Who’s in it? Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. He’s all twinkly smiles, smart one-liners and Top Gun shades; she’s a shrieking ditz. Peter Sarsgaard, fresh from playing the sleazy seducer in An Education, is also involved.
What are its prospects?
It will come down to the chemistry between Cruise and Diaz.

Shrek Forever After
Release date: July 9
What is it? The fourth outing for the grumpy green ogre. This time, Shrek finds himself in a parallel version of Far Far Away, where he and his beloved Fiona have never met. Directed by Mike Mitchell, who made, uh-oh, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.
Who’s in it? The regular gang: Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots.
What are its prospects? Shrek the Third was the second-highest-grossing film of 2007. How could this fail?

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Release date: July 9
What is it? The further adventures of teenager Bella and her vampire love Edward, whose forbidden bond is under threat again. This is the third movie based on Stephenie Meyer’s four-book Twilight sequence.
Who’s in it? Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, now superstars in the teen-hero firmament, reprise their roles as Bella and Edward.
What are its prospects? Excellent: the previous instalment, New Moon, broke box-office records last November, grossing $73 million on its first day of release.

Inception
Release date: July 16
What is it? Plot details are sketchy, but the word on the web is that it imagines the development of a technology that can access people’s dreams, allowing information to be extracted — or ideas implanted.
Who’s in it? Leonardo DiCaprio is a businessman attempting to persuade entrepreneur Cillian Murphy to split his company into two. Apparently, DiCaprio and his wife become trapped in a dream at some point.
What are its prospects? With Christopher Nolan, director of the last two Batman movies (and the next), at the helm, expect a blockbuster with a brain.

Toy Story 3
Release date: July 23
What is it? The third instalment in Pixar’s phenomenally successful Toy Story franchise in which little Andy is now all grown up and heading off to college, leaving the toys — Woody, Buzz and the rest — to face an uncertain future.
Who’s in it? Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz), John Ratzenburger (Hamm) and Wallace Shawn (Rex) all return, accompanied this time by former James Bond Timothy Dalton as Mr Pricklepants.
What are its prospects? It’s Pixar. It’s directed by Lee Unkrich (Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, Toy Story 2). It’s a cert.

The A-Team
Release date: July 30
What is it? A re-imagining of the Eighties TV series about three US soldiers arrested for a crime they did not commit, who, after their escape from prison, are reunited with an old buddy to become soldiers of fortune.
Who’s in it? Liam Neeson plays “Hannibal” Smith; Bradley Cooper, from last year’s dumb-but-great The Hangover, is “Faceman” Peck; Sharlto Copley, magnificent in the sci-fi hit District 9, is “Howling Mad” Murdock; and martial-arts fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson slips into the role created by Mr T, BA Baracus.
What are its prospects? Lingering affection for the TV series guarantees interest.

The Expendables
Release date: August 20
What is it? Sylvester Stallone directs and stars in an all-action adventure about a group of mercenaries on a mission to eliminate an evil South American dictator. It soon becomes clear, however, that nothing is quite as it seems…
Who’s in it? Stallone has assembled a bunch of the meanest muthas ever to bare their gleaming pecs on screen, among them Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jet Li — and the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
What are its prospects? The cast list alone will guarantee big box office.
